Lighting a Candle in Our Church
Lighting a candle is a cherished tradition in the Catholic faith. Its gentle flame symbolises the light of Christ, carrying our prayers, hopes, and intentions before God long after we leave the church. It is a quiet gesture of love, remembrance, and trust in the Lord’s care. For those who are unable to visit in person, you are welcome to purchase a candle online and we will light it for you here in the church, placing your prayer before the Lord. You may also choose to sponsor the church’s exterior lighting at night, a beautiful way of illuminating God’s house for the whole community and allowing its light to shine as a witness of faith and devotion.
The Symbolism of Candlelight
Lighting a votive candle in church is a cherished practice in Catholic tradition which symbolises the light of Christ, the 'Light of the World' (John 8:12). Chasing away darkness, carrying your prayers, and warming hearts.
Whether for healing, peace, gratitude, or remembrance, your candle burns on as a gentle reminder of love and faith. It's an immediate, heartfelt way to feel connected in quiet reverence—open to all.
A Meaningful Offering
Our suggested donation isn't about purchasing grace, but a voluntary gift of sacrifice. It covers essentials like wax and upkeep, while echoing biblical calls to pair prayer with alms (Matthew 6:1–4). This fosters intention and community stewardship, transforming light into shared care for our sacred space here at the glorious St Paul's RC Church.
